People of Gilgit

Baltistan District


Baltistan is extremely mountainous region. The second highest peak K2 is situated in Baltistan. In Baltistan are fourteen highest peaks which attracts tourists.

Astore District


Astore was carved out of Diamer District in 2004. The district headquarter is Eidgah the previous tehsil headquarter. Astore valley has a moderate climate during summer. In winter it can snow up to 6 inches (15 cm) in the main valleys and up to 2-3 feet (60-0 cm) in the mountains. In Mirmalik valley it snows up to 6 feet in February.

Ghanche District


Ghanche is the easternmost district of the Gilgit.The capital of Ghanche District is Khaplu. This is the coldest place in Pakistan.

Diamer District



Diamer is the district where the Karakoram Highway enters to the Gilgit from the NWFP. Chilas is the capital of Diamer district. Diamer is famous by it's pine forest. Pine wood is used in good quality of furniture.

Ghizer District



Ghizer is North most part of Gilgit. It is multi ethnic district and four major languages are spoken. Shina, Khowar, Burushaski and Wakhi. In Ghizer is a famous and beautiful lake is called Phunder lake which is famous for finish.

Places Of Interests In Gilgit




Just 10 kms from the town of Gilgit, is a Buddha carved into a stone face. Buddha is a victory monument of Taj Mughal, built 700 years ago. The beautiful valley of Naltar in the south eastern side of Gilgit is 35 km away from the main town. It's lush green pastures and green carpeted ground make it a jewel of the Gilgit. It is a forested (pine) village known for its wildlife and magnificent mountain scenery.

Introduction to Gilgit


Gilgit is the administrative capital of Northern Area Pakistan, consisted of six districts namely Ghezir, Gilgit, Diamar, Astore, Baltistan (Skardu) and Ghanche. It is accessible by road and air from Islamabad. It has an area of 14,680 mi (38,021 km ). The region is significantly mountainous, lying on the foothills of the Karakoram mountains, and has an average altitude of 1,500 m (5,000 ft).
Gilgit has spectacular scenic beauty. The peak tourist season is from May to mid-October though the tourist season is round the year. The maximum temperature in May is 33 C and minimum 16 C In September.
Gilgit is the gateway to China and Central Asia. Gilgit is also the hub of various valleys to the North Hunza and China. To the South, Diamar, Kohistan and Swat. To the East Skardu and Kashmir, and to the West Ghezir and Chitral.

Transport System in Gilgit



Gilgit Airport to Hotel.
Gilgit Airport is located at a small ground very close to the center it takes 5 - 10 Minutes from Airport to any hotel in town
Gilgit to Hunza.
100 Kilometers form Gilgit one of the most scenic journeys in the world. Stopping at several photo stops it takes 3 - 4 Hrs to reach Hunza.
Gilgit to Skardu.
An spectacular drive along the Indus river between Karakorum & Himalaya mountains. Road is narrow so 220 Kms. take about 9 Hours

Naltar tour.
Naltar is probably one of the most spectacular Excursions in Pakistan, for those who like a little bit of adventure. The road to Naltar is pretty but Very dusty until the village of Nomal after Nomal you drive along the side of mountains and the climb is quite steep. At the upper Naltar you very instantly see the beautiful meadows the temperature is also very comfortable so one can really get a fancy escape from Gilgit`s heat. There is a small restaurant at the meadows which can serve a hot meal or you can carry Lunch boxes from Serena and have the restaurant make tea for you.

Mountains of the region are known to be the highest and greatest in the Number around the world. Stretch of Gilgit comes in the rain shadow of Nanga Parbat Mountain i.e. The moon soon winds are blocked by the massive of Nanga Parbat and clouds can not reach Gilgit which makes it dry & rugged but the labor of the strong and willing local population has even claimed the hard mountains for cultivation's. Due to this there are beautiful green orchids of many fruits in the valley. This makes an spectacular contrast in the green fields and ruggedness on the mountains topped with white snow a scenery only found in the northern areas of Pakistan.

Gilgit is located at an area of 72,496 km in the North east of Pakistan . The city had been a central point of trade and political activity as early as 1st century AD. Since then it has always been a very strategic point for the neighboring countries. Surrounded by the massive mountains of Karakorums Gilgit is largest town of northern area of Pakistan. Beyond here there is no such a big town or city in any direction within a distance of about 450 Kilometers in any direction. Gilgit is the administrative and commercial capital of Northern areas.
